George Clooney & Amal Clooney attend 4th Venice Film Festival - 'Suburbicon’ - Premiere
George Clooney, the Academy Award-winning actor, director, writer and producer, received the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award on June 7 at Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. The ceremony was aired on Thursday night on TNT.
Sir Howard Stringer, chairman of the AFI board of trustees, spoke on Clooney’s multiple talents and passion last year.
“George Clooney is America’s leading man,” Stringer told USA Today. “Director, producer, writer and actor — a modern-day screen icon who combines the glamour of a time gone by with a ferocious passion for ensuring art’s impact echoes beyond the screen.”

He was supposed to be presented the prestigious award by his long-time friend and actress Julia Roberts, but she dropped out last-minute. Shirley MacLaine filled in for her, admitting on stage that she doesn’t know Clooney that well.
The award was first given to John Ford in 1973, and more recent winners include Diane Keaton (2017), John Williams (2016), Steve Martin (2015), Jane Fonda (2014).
Clooney’s special night, the 46th of its kind, was attended by Jennifer Aniston, Cate Blanchett, Don Cheadle, Courteney Cox, musical guest Miley Cyrus, Laura Dern, Diane Keaton, Anna Kendrick, Jimmy Kimmel, Shirley MacLaine, Julianna Margulies, Bill Murray and more.
Additionally, his wife Amal Clooney gave a heartfelt speech on the acclaimed actor as he was seen tearing up at her kind words.
“Although George’s modesty attributes much of the success we are celebrating here tonight to luck, I think it’s incredible talent and character that got him here and these attributes also make him an amazing husband and father,” she said. “I’m so proud of you my love. Congratulations on this great honor that you’re receiving tonight. I’m proud of you, but I also know that when our children find out not only what you have done, but who you are, they will be so proud of you too.”
