In a statement filed on October 8, singer Garth Brooks responded to a lawsuit filed against him last week by his former hairstylist and makeup artist, who accused him of sexual assault and battery.
Filed in the United States District Court in the Southern District of Mississippi, Brooks, 62, rejected all allegations made by Woman X as false, using her name (despite her anonymity in her filing) and claimed that he had been a “victim of a shakedown” and needed to “defend himself against extortion.”
Studies have shown that just 2% of sexual assault accusations have been proven to be false.
The accusations Woman X alleged included sexual grooming, sexual touching and sexual assault, among others. Such accusations were submitted in a “demand letter” to Brooks on July 17, 2024, and Woman X filed a complaint in California court on October 3. Brooks claimed that Woman X proceeded to threaten to file the lawsuit.
In a statement, Brooks said, “For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars. It has been like having a loaded gun waved in my face.”
In one of the filings, Brooks declared that he planned to refile his complaints without pseudonyms for Woman X, as she neglected to omit his name and shared his identity with the press. Brooks claimed he needed “to obtain relief” from Woman X’s accusations.
Woman X’s legal team replied to Brooks’ statement: “Garth Brooks just revealed his true self…With no legal justification, Brooks outed her because he thinks the laws don’t apply to him. On behalf of our client, we will be moving for maximum sanctions against him immediately.”
Brooks also complained that Woman X “attempted defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress” and “devised a malicious scheme to blackmail” him to pay her millions. He claimed that this lawsuit stemmed from her requests for salaried employment and medical benefits; when he denied her requests, she “responded with false and outrageous allegations of sexual misconduct she claims occurred years ago.”
