Garry Shandling, ‘Larry Sanders Show’ Star, Dead At 66

Garry Shandling, who was best known for It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show, has died. He was 66.

Garry Shandling Dies At 66

Shandling died Thursday at St. John’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to E! News. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call to Shandling’s home Thursday morning. Shandling was alive during transport to the hospital, but later passed away.

Shandling’s cause of death is unknown at this time, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the 70s, Shandling made a name for himself as a standup comedian, and made regular appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Shandling, along with former Saturday Night Live writer Alan Zweibel launched It’s Garry Shandling’s Show in 1985 on Showtime. In the series, Shandling played a fictional version of himself. The show, which often saw the comedian breaking the fouth wall, played for four seasons.

Shandling’s next major TV project was HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show, which starred Shandling as the titular host. It also starred Jeffrey Tambor, Rip Torn, Jeremy Piven, Janeane Garofalo, Sarah Silverman and Bob Odenkirk. The show won three Emmys during its six seasons.

In more recent years, Shandling has made appearances in a number of feature films, including, Zoolander, Trust the Man, Iron Man 2, The Dictator and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
