Retailer chain GameStop announced a new PowerPass program for their customers last month. This program launched this week in select locations, but the company confirmed yesterday that it will be temporarily halted until further notice.
GameStop’s PowerPass would cost users $60. However, it would in turn grant gamers with unlimited access to the store’s used game catalog for six months, basically turning its collection into a library. Furthermore, even though only one title can be rented at a time, users could swap out games as frequently as they desired. Finally, when your subscription expires, you could choose one pre-owned game to keep permanently.
However, yesterday the company’s management suddenly ordered employees to remove all signs advertising the service. While the reasoning for this quick freezing remains unknown, GameStop has issued the following statement to Kotaku:
“We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service.”
The spokesperson continued, confirming how users who return their rented video game and PowerPass will obtain a full refund. A more specific reasoning for the program’s pause eludes us, although GameStop personal informed Kotaku that they’re skeptical the company’s computers are capable of handling the workload PowerPass would demand.
Moreover, employees of the longstanding retail chain allegedly have been ordered to remove the current Holiday Guide and this week’s circular.
