‘Game of Thrones’ Will Not Have A Spinoff Series, Confirmed Co-Creator David Benioff

Game of Thrones creator David Benioff said at the Emmys Sunday that his team will not be making any prequel or spinoff series in the future.

BENIOFF CONFIRMS: NO GAME OF THRONES SPINOFFS

While he has already announced that Game of Thrones will stick around for two more seasons before ending, the executive producer was asked about the future of his show at the Emmys. “This is it,” Benioff said. “You might want to ask George [R.R. Martin] about that. It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.”

Martin has written five novels from the A Song of Ice and Fire series, the first book of which was called A Game of Thrones. Two more novels are currently in the works, with no release date in sight. While the first three books of the series took two years apiece to write, the fourth took five years, and the fifth took six.

The author, however, is not done with his highly acclaimed series. “Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history – everything that led up to Game of Thrones – so there’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more,” Martin said when asked. “At the moment, we still have this show to finish, and I still have two books to finish, so that’s all speculation.”

The HBO hit show took home 12 Emmys this year (nominated for 24), bringing its total to 38 Emmy wins. This makes Game of Thrones the winningest show in Emmy history, just beating out Frasier with 37.

Game of Thrones season 7 is currently in production. See the HBO teaser below.
