HBO president of programming Casey Bloys has confirmed that a prequel is being discussed in the Game of Thrones universe, with author George R.R. Martin at the helm.
The ideas are in the “embryonic stages,” in fact, according to HBO CEO Richard Plepler. “It certainly has not escaped Casey and myself that there might be some brand extension [for GoT] that would be exciting,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “It certainly has not escaped the producers. Right now we’re focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect.”
Shooting for GoT season seven is underway, with the eighth and final season coming in 2018. Martin, meanwhile, is still working on finishing the sixth installment in the Song of Ice and Fire book series. The fifth in the series came out in 2011, and the TV series has now surpassed all plot points in the books.
