‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 6, Episode 3 Recap: Jon Snow’s Watch Has Ended

Game Of Thrones returned Sunday night, picking up right where it left off last week, with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) rising from the dead.

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 3 Recap

Castle Black

Davos (Liam Cunningham), mouth agape, stands in the doorway as Jon Snow awakes from death, gasping for air. Feeling his healed stab wounds, Jon shakes with disbelief. Seeing Davos, he tries to rise from the table and walk towards him but stumbles. As Davos fetches him a cloak, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) walks in. “They stabbed me,” Jon says, in shock. “Olly put a knife in my heart. I shouldn’t be here.” Melisandre wants to know where he went and what he saw after Olly (Brenock O’Connor) finished him off. According to Jon, there was nothing.

A short time later, Jon gets dressed and comes down to greet the men who had stayed loyal to him during Alliser Thorne’s (Owen Teale) coup, and Wildling leader Tormund Giantsbane. Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) tells Jon the wildlings think that he’s a god, but that he knows better. “I saw your p–ker. What kind of God would have a p–ker that small?” Tormund quips.

At Sea

Samwell (John Bradley) is seasick aboard a ship sailing away from Castle Black. As Sam spews into a bucket, Gilly (Hannah Murray), who thinks they’re on their way to Old Towne, talks about the naming of the sea. Sam informs her that while he will be heading to the Citadel in Old Towne, he wants to drop her off at his family home in Horn Hill. He says his family will take care of her and little Sam since no women are allowed at the Citadel.

Dorne

Bran’s (Isaac Hempstead Wright) latest trip back into the past with the Three-Eyed-Raven brings him to the Tower of Joy in Dorne a couple of decades ago. There, they find Bran’s father Eddard Stark, Howland Reed and four other men confronting three members of the Kingsguard serving Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Determined to get to his sister Lyanna, who was being held in the tower, Eddard enters into a sword fight with some of the best fighters in Westeros. In the end, it is Eddard and Arthur remaining, and the former looks on the cusp of losing. But Howland rises from the ground to stab Arthur in the back and then he and Ned run to the tower.

Vaes Dothrak

Dany (Emilia Clarke) arrives at the place where all of the Khal widows live. They strip her of her clothes and jewels, despite her protestations and long list of titles. The women tell her that they were once young too, but that youth and plans for the future don’t discount tradition. She has to abide by the rules of the khalasar.

Mereen

Varys (Conleth Hill) talks to a woman named Vala, who is the person who helped the Sons of the Harpy kill the Second Sons and the Unsullied. He wants her to give him all of the information that she has. In exchange, he will send her to Pentos with silver to keep her afloat. Varys brings the news Vala ends up providing to him to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), who had been struggling to make small talk with Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel). According to Vala, the masters of the three richest Slaver’s Bay cities are all funding the Sons of the Harpy.

King’s Landing

While it was Varys’ little birds that led him to Vala, Qyburn (Anton Lesser) is trying to win them over with sweets. The children accept his proposal and the sweets but shiver upon encountering The Mountain. When Jamie (Nikolaj Coster Waldau) enters the room, he questions the Mountain’s ability to understand, while Cersei (Lena Headey) tells Qyburn that she wants to hear what every one says about her in all of Westeros. She and Jamie then bring the Mountain with them into the small council meeting. The brother-sister duo insist, rightly, that they have a place at the small council, and ask about what is going to be done of Myrcella’s murder.  While their claim can’t be disputed, Uncle Kevan (Ian Gelder) points out that they don’t have to stick around for the meeting and bails with the rest.

Elsewhere, Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) urges the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) to let his mother see Myrcella. The High Sparrow preaches to Tommen about the faith’s place in the Seven Kingdoms, and threatens to dismantle the renewed trust between the boy king and his mother.

Bravvos

Arya (Maisie Williams) gets lessons from the Waif (Faye Marsay), and slowly but surely improves her blind fighting as well as her conviction that she is no one. Finally, Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) gives Arya back her sight.

Winterfell

Ramsay Snow (Iwan Rheon) is holding court, and gets a visit from Smalljon Umber (Dean S. Jagger), who praises Ramsay for dispatching his father – though Ramsay denies it. Lord Umber is there because he wants Ramsay’s help. In exchange for the help, he’s got two gifts – Osha (Natalie Tena) and Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson).

Castle Black

Back a Castle Black, it is time for Lord Commander Jon Snow to deliver justice to the men who killed him, including Alliser Thorne and Olly. Though he looks pained at the prospect of hanging then men, Jon Snow cuts the rope and watches as they take their last gasps of breath. He then walks over to Dolorous Edd and gives him his black Lord Commander cloak, and says, “My watch has ended.”
