Hit HBO show Game of Thrones has been officially confirmed to return in 2019.

GAME OF THRONES NEWS: SERIES TO RETURN IN 2019

The eighth and final season of GoT will come in 2019, not in 2018 as many fans had hoped. The network released a brief statement confirming the timeline of the show, but gave no specific dates. The announcement did little more than give names of the writers, producers, and directors who will be involved in the final season.

Production on season 8 began in October, and while there will be fewer episodes (only six), there is speculation that some episodes will be longer than in past seasons. Shooting will reportedly run through August 2018.

“Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter last year. “The shooting is complicated enough — on different continents, with all the technical aspects — and the special effects are a whole other production period that we’re trying to figure out. That is a big factor in all of this.”

The directors for season 8 are David BenioffD.B. WeissDavid Nutter and Miguel Sapochink. Benioff and Weiss also serve as writers, along with Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill. Executive producers will be Benioff, Weiss, Carolyn StraussFrank Doelger, and Bernadette Caulfield, while co-executive producers are Cogman, Guymon CasadyVince Gerardis, and author George R.R. Martin.
