'Game Of Thrones' To End After 7th Season

Game of Thrones, HBO’s hit medieval-fantasy series, will likely wrap up with its seventh season.

'Game Of Thrones' To Air 7 Seasons

Game of Thrones showrunners – David Benioff and Dan Weiss – believe that seven seasons will allow them to complete the small screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire book series.

“It feels like this is the midpoint for us,” Benioff told Entertainment Weekly. “If we’re going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right down the middle, the pivot point.”

Seven seasons has been the loose plan for the showrunners from the start. After all, the number seven reoccurs frequently throughout Martin’s beloved series.

“I would say it’s the goal we’ve had from the beginning,” Benioff said. “It was our unstated goal, because to start on a show and say your goal is seven seasons is the height of lunacy. Once we got to the point where we felt like we’re going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us.”

HBO, which has greatly benefitted from the success and acclaim of Game of Thrones, appears to be onboard for the seven seasons – possibly eight.

“I’m expecting to be sitting down with Dan and David to talk season 5 and we’ll talk about how things are looking,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told EW. “We’re all very mindful that they’re having conversations all the time with [author George R.R. Martin]. I think they do feel bullish enough that there’s enough story to deliver through season 7. I hate to sound greedy, but our longest shows have gone 7 or 8 seasons, so seven is a nice long run for us.”

Game of Thrones' fourth season will premiere April 6 on HBO. Following the third season’s memorable Red Wedding, the upcoming season will feature the Purple Wedding – the nuptials between King Joffrey (Jack Gleason) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer)– and John Snow (Kit Harrington) holding off the Wildlings from Castle Black.
