'Game Of Thrones' Star Maisie Williams Talks Big Screen Debut 'Heatstroke,' Never Playing A 'Romantic Lead'

Maisie Williams, best known for playing tomboy Arya Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, is making her feature film debut in the thriller Heatstroke.

Maisie Williams In 'Heatstroke'

Williams filmed Heatstroke after the first season of Game of Thrones aired and jumped at the opportunity to take the part in the Evelyn Purcell film. “At the time I was in no business to be picking and choosing the role that I did. I was still a complete newcomer to this world and I had to prove myself. So when Heatstroke came about I was absolutely thrilled that there were people who liked what I did and wanted me to be in their film,” Williams told Vanity Fair, adding, “I’m so thrilled it worked out so well.”

In Heatstroke, Williams plays Josie, the daughter of a research scientist, who brings her along on a trip to the African desert. When her father is killed by an arms dealer, she has to trust her father’s girlfriend and her own instincts to survive the killers who are now out to finish them as well. Due to the rugged nature of the role, her latest character has drawn comparisons to that of Arya.

“I see that it’s a similar scenario. But I think that’s always what I’m going to do,” revealed Williams. “I can’t ever see myself playing the romantic lead because that’s not me, I’m not that girl. I mean, that’s acting and you can pretend to be that girl, but you draw from what you know, and I guess never really being that person and kind of always being that person climbing trees and swimming in rivers, that’s the role that always attracts me.”

Though Williams is a relative newcomer to the industry, she already sees the patterns of female romantic leads; they’re either completely hapless or blown up into some feminine ideal.

“I’ve yet to see a movie like that, really,” said Williams, referring to a romantic movie with a balanced female lead. “It’s just the way it goes, I guess. Maybe that’s something I could bring to all this. You see Bridget Jones, which is one extreme, you see the opposite, like The Notebook, which is “the perfect girl.” But there’s no happy medium. Maybe that’s something I’ll do in the future, yeah!"

Game of Thrones' fifth season will premiere in 2015.
