‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff: ‘Certainly No Lack Of Material’ Says George R.R. Martin

Game of Thrones will likely come to an end in the next couple of years, but author George R. R. Martin believes it’s more than possible that a spinoff series could be developed in the future.

Game Of Thrones Spinoff

As of yet, there hasn’t been any meaningful talk about a Game of Thrones spinoff coming to HBO or elsewhere. However, were showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff to become interested in the possibility, Martin doesn’t believe that they’ll have any trouble finding material to work with to bring people back into the world of Westeros through a different angle.

“There is certainly no lack of material,” Martin told Entertainment Weekly. “Every episode of The Naked City – one of the television shows I watched as a kid – ended with a voice-over: ‘There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them.’ There are eight million stories in Westeros as well … and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested.”

“The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk & Egg stories,” Martin continued. “Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television; that would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series. The Hedge Knight and its sequels are lighter [in tone] than A Song of Ice and Fire, more in the realm of action/adventure.”

The Dunk & Egg stories to which Martin referred exist within the same world as his The Song of Ice and Fire series that inspired Game of Thrones. Taking place 90 years prior to the stories that are told in The Song of Ice and Fire, the Dunk & Egg stories follow a hedge knight-turned-member of the Kingsguard Ser Duncan the Tall and squire-turned-king Aegon V “Egg” Targaryen.

Martin also believes that HBO could mine the history of The Song of Ice and Fire series, including the Targaryen Civil War and Robert’s Rebellion, for a new series.

Game of Thrones‘ sixth season will premiere on HBO Sunday, April 24.
