Game of Thrones' “The Laws of Gods and Men” saw Stannis visit Braavos, Dany’s sense of justice questioned and Tyrion derail his father’s plans for his murder trial.

Game of Thrones Recap

The episode first shows Stannis (Stephen Dillane) and Davos (Liam Cunningham) in Braavos, where they attempt to hit up the Iron Bank for coin to fund their quest for the throne. After waiting for hours, they're finally given an audience with Tycho Nestoris (Mark Gatiss). Stannis makes the case, as he has over and over, that he’s the rightful heir to the throne as Robert Baratheon’s brother. Robert’s children, Stannis tells Tycho, were never really his and that they were born of Lannister incest.

Tycho doesn’t have any proof about the Lannister family, all he knows are the numbers in his books. He wants to know the number of men they have, the number of ships, etc. Daavos, seeing Stannis’s poor negotiating skills for what they are, steps in and speaks on his behalf. He uses his own mutilated fingers as proof of Stannis’s commitment to truth and justice. Somehow, that does the trick, as he’s shown later on visiting Salladhor Saan (Lucian Msamati) in a bathhouse and giving him an unknown sum of money that works to get his pirate pal back onboard with Stannis’s cause.

Dany Rules In Mereen

In Mereen, a man is attempting to herd his goats while his young son looks on tossing rocks. Then, up from the gorge, rises one of Dany’s (Emilia Clarke) dragons. It spits fire at the livestock, scooping one up in its claws and flying away. The livid herder visits Dany in her throne room in the pyramid, dropping the bones of his scorched goats at her feet. In return, she gives him three times the worth of his herd.

Dany next has to hear the grievances of Hizdahr zo Loraq (Joel Fry), a Mereenese nobleman whose father was crucified at her demand. According to Hizdahr, his father had been one of the men who’d fought against the crucifixion of the children that led her to the slave city. Furthermore, he questions whether repeating the acts of the wicked could ever be justice. Dany refuses to be contrite, though understands how difficult it must be for him to have lost a father.

Reek's Loyalty To Ramsay

At the Dreadfort, Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) is in bed with his latest conquest as Yara (Gemma Whelan) approaches the castle with a crew of Ironborn men. In order to inspire their bloodlust, she reads the letter from Ramsay that speaks of his mutilation of her brother, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), the prince of the Ironborn. When they arrive at the Dreadfort, they learn that Theon aka Reek is kept in the kennels. He’s been so successfully broken by Ramsay that nothing his sister says can move him to leave with her. When Ramsay arrives, he sets the dogs on Yara, who retreats to the boats and declares her brother dead.

Ramsay, showing affection for Theon after witnessing his resistance to Yara, offers him a bath. He watches as Theon strips down – gleefully taking in his scars – and then sits beside him as he bathes. After confirming that Reek loves him, Ramsay, in his latest bit of cruelty, tells him that he needs him to help him take Moat Cailin. To do so, he’ll have to play a role – that of Theon Greyjoy – the identity he’d so successfully beaten out of his captive.

Tyrion's Trial In King's Landing

Over in King’s Landing, Tywin (Charles Dance) convenes the Small Council to discuss Dany. They know that the Targaryen heir has sworn swords, the Unsullied, devoted former slaves and three dragons at her disposal. They also know that she has two wise and shrewd knights – Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) and Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) – offering her advice. Tywin asks for a quill and paper, though what he plans to write and to whom is unknown.

Later on, Jamie (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) collects his brother, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), from his cell in the dungeons so that he can stand trial in the throne room. The first witness is Se Meryn (Ian Beattie), who tries to paint Tyrion as a jealous uncle who frequently threatened his late nephew. Pycelle (Julian Glover) claims that Tyrion stole poisons from his stores. Next up is Varys (Conleth Hill), followed by Cersei (Lena Headey), who quotes Tyrion as telling her, “joy will turn to ashes in your mouth.”

Sensing that Tyrion is fast loosing his trial, Jamie meets with his father to discuss options. Desperate to save his brother, Jamie offers to quit the Kingsguard and continue the family line back at Casterly Rock if Tywin will spare Tyrion’s life. Without a moment’s hesitation, Tywin agrees to the deal. Jamie reports back to Tyrion that though he’ll be found guilty, he’ll get to live out his life at The Wall. Tyrion seems to agree, but that’s before one of the last witnesses is called.

Back in the throne room, it’s none other than Shae (Sibel Kekilli) who ascends to give her testimony. She claims that while she served as Sansa’s handmaiden she heard that Tyrion and Sansa (Sophie Turner) were plotting Joffrey’s death together. She then reveals that she was his whore and offered intimate details of how he first approached her and that he liked her to call him “my lion.” Destroyed, Tyrion all but seals his own grave.

Tyrion looks up to his father in the Iron Throne and tells him he wishes to confess. Instead of telling everyone what they want to hear – that he poisoned Joffrey – he makes a confession of a different kind. Tyrion confesses to having been born a dwarf, for that, according to him, is the reason for which he’s been wrongly accused of his nephew’s murder. "I saved this city and all your worthless lives!" Tyrion, referring to the Battle of the Blackwater, says to the congregated residents of King’s Landing . "I should have let Stannis kill you all! … I wish I was the monster you think I am."

To Cersei, Tyrion adds, "Watching your vicious bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores!"

In closing his “confession,” Tyrion demands a trial by combat, leaving Tywin visibly stunned.
