Game Of Thrones Recap: Jamie Lannister Loses A Hand

Game of Thrones returned last night with Tyrion getting appointed “Master of the Coin” by his father, Tywin Lannister. The council meeting announcement came as a surprise to Tryion and to the others present, as fiscal responsibility has never been known as a strength of his. Although Tyrion protests, his father’s will proves stronger and so he accepts the title.

Meanwhile, Jamie Lannister and Brienne have been taken hostage by the “Brave Companions” who want to earn a large ransom at their return to Robb Stark. At Jamie’s urgnings, Brienne tolerates abuse from their captors, fearing that being of less value to the captors will be her demise. As Rob Stark waits for Jamie's return, he considers his bleak prospects with Tywin Lannister alive and settled in at King’s Landing.

Melisandre has plans to leave Dragonstone in order to summon more other-worldly powers. Stannis attempts to convince Melisandre to stay, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. She vows that upon her return she will have greater power and strength for him to use to his advantage. In Astapor, Daneyrs is humiliated when an offer she makes for the slave army is laughed at. However, she is ultimately successful in her bartering when she offers Kraznys one of her dragons for the “unsullied.”

Back at King’s Landing, Podrick Payne, Tyrion’s squire, is reaping the rewards for his exhibition of bravery during the Batlle of Blackwater Bay – with an orgy with three of Lord Baelish’s escorts. Tyrion later finds out that the escorts did not take payment for their services, citing Payne’s prowess in the bedroom. This notion incenses Tyrion, who has never found himself excempt from paying his escorts and prostitutes.

Despite having minded Jaime’s warnings, Brienne finds herself hauled off to the woods to be gang raped. Hearing her screams, Jaime quickly tells the leader of the Brave Companions that Brienne’s wealthy family will also pay him for her safe return home, thereby saving Brienne from further torture. However, when Jamie pushes the leader further, with promises of power and wealth from the Lannister family, he’s not quite as lucky. The sellsword, an ardent opponent of the Lannisters, slices off Jamie’s hand.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO at 9/8c.
