Were you worried about what you would do once Game of Thrones ended? Well have no fear, as we are one step closer to a spin-off series.
George R.R. Martin received the green light to begin filming the pilot for the prequel after HBO ordered for a pilot in June, according to Dateline. Filming will start in October in Belfast. They are reportedly set to film at The Paint Hall, located in Belfast’s Titanic Quarters. This is the same location that was used to film Game of Thrones, as well as the Superman TV prequel, Krpton, and the upcoming installment of Star Wars.
There is no official title for the series but Martin has been using the working title “The Long Night” for right now. HBO officially greenlit the pilot just last month. Along with Martin, writer Jane Goldman and director Matthew Vaughn are signed on to the project. The duo are responsible for movies like Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service and X-Men: First Class.
The series is described as showing “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
However, fans may be a little disappointed that their favorite characters from the original show will not be making any appearances in the prequel, as it takes place thousands of year prior. In a blog post in June, Martin wrote: “None of the characters or actors from Game of Thrones will appear in the new show. All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the pre in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before Game of Thrones (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long).”
As of right now, HBO only ordered a pilot, not a whole season, so there is a chance that the show will not move forward. But if all goes well, we may get the series sooner than we think.
