Game of Thrones is adding a fifth country to its notoriously intense production schedule – the United States.
The HBO show is known as being the most expensive and elaborate television show to hit cable. For the fantasy hit’s third season, it will be shooting in Morocco, Iceland, Croatia, Northern Ireland (the home base) and lastly, Los Angeles where the show will be introducing a new cast member – Bart the Bear II, according to series creator George R. R. Martin's blog.
The diverse filming locations correspond to the various storylines of Game of Thrones characters. Daenerys plotline requires the deserts of Morocco. Jon Snow and Ygritte's story needs Iceland’s snowy landscape and icy mountains, while Croatia’s scenery is used for visuals of Kings Landing. “For the first time, we’re flying in actors to L.A.,” showrunner David Benioff told Entertainment Weekly. “So it ends up being five countries and three units this year. It’s just exploded." While no one is giving specifics about the scenes to be shot in Los Angeles and Bart the Bear's role, it's clear that those behind the show have no intention of disappointing its loyal fans.
Game of Thrones is paving the way for other big-budget ideas to make their way to TV – like George Lucas’ rumored Star Wars series. The SAG award winner for best stunt ensemble on television will return to HBO on March 31.
