Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s "Superman vs. Batman" sequel to last summer’s blockbuster Man of Steel. Godot will star opposite Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Clark Kent/Superman, and Ben Affleck who was recently cast as Batman.
“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character,” Snyder said in a statement.
“I can’t express how happy and excited I am to be part of this amazing project,” Gadot wrote on her official Facebook page after her casting was announced.
The 28-year-old Gadot, a relatively unknown Hollywood actress, is no stranger to the action genre. She is best known for her role as Gisele in the Fast & Furious series. Gadot joined the series when it was rebooted in 2009’s Fast & Furious and reprised her role in Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.
Gadot grew up in Israel and was named Miss Israel in 2004 when she was 18 and went on to compete in Miss Universe. When she returned to Israel after the pageant, Gadot began working as a model before beginning her army service as a fitness instructor in 2007. During her two-year service with the Israeli Defense Forces, Gadot continued to model on the side, working with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism. In 2007, she participated in a photo spread for Maxim with the goal of boosting tourism with a campaign featuring women in the military in bikinis. Gadot ended up being chosen as Maxim’s July 2007 issue cover girl.
Gadot’s modeling and acting career have been going strong since. Though most recognizable from her work in Fast & Furious, Gadot also had small roles in Knight and Day and Date Night. She is married and has one child, a daughter born in 2011.
So far, the internet response to the news of Gadot’s casting has been relatively positive, especially considering the enormous backlash Affleck’s casting received. Not much is known about the Man of Steel sequel, but it is set to go into production next year and is aiming for a July 2015 release.
