As the one-year anniversary of YouTube star Gabby Petito‘s death approaches, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, has announced a $100,000 donation to help fight against domestic violence and aid victims.

Last year, Petito was killed by her fiance Brian Laundrie as they traveled cross-country, living out of a van, says investigators.

Schmidt said the donations from the Gabby Petito Foundations given to the National Domestic Violence Hotline will help other victims stuck in bad relationships get the help they need.

“Our story begins because of a domestic violence tragedy and we don’t want to see that happen to anybody else,” Schmidt said in an interview.

Petito’s body was found in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming on September 19, 2021. She was dead for at least three weeks before she was found. Her death was declared a homicide by “manual strangulation.”

Laundrie disappeared and an extensive search for him commenced. His remains were found in Florida’s Carlton Reserve on October 20, 2021.
