Furious 7 broke over five box office records its opening weekend, taking in $384 million globally.
Furious 7 was never going to do badly at the box office. The newest installment in the beloved Fast & Furious franchise stars original cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Paul Walker, with new cast additions Jason Statham and Kurt Russell – not to mention returning franchise players Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris.
Undoubtedly, the film didn’t only appeal to franchise fans, as many flocked to the theaters to see Paul Walker’s final performance, and find out how the franchise would tackle his character’s story line in the wake of his mid-production death. Many members of the cast, including Diesel and Gibson, had been encouraging fans to make Furious 7 the biggest hit yet in honor of Walker, and the fans delivered.
Furious 7 made $143.6 million domestically, beating Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s $95 million to make it the top grossing April debut ever. Furious 7 is also the fourth largest international opening, trailing behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($483.2 million), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394.4 million) and The Avengers ($392 million). Furious 7 can also claim the biggest Easter opening (easily surpassing Clash of the Titans’ $61.2 million) and the biggest April Imax opening.
Furious 7 also beat previous Fast & Furious franchise records. It beat out Fast & Furious 6 for the biggest debut in the franchise (FF 6 took home $97.4 million its opening weekend) and is the biggest opening for every cast member and first time Fast & Furious director James Wan.
Gibson celebrated the box office record with a photo of himself and Walker, writing, “P-Dubber you did it bro…You changed our world.”
Diesel also celebrated the film’s success with a nod to his “brother,” sharing the music video for Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” the song that (SPOILER ALERT!) plays throughout the film’s sendoff to Walker and his character. “Pablo, this weekend you turned the world into a family,” Diesel wrote.
Pablo, this weekend you turned the world into a family…Thanks for the love…
