Comedian Dave Coulier has revealed that he is in the midst of a battle against a “very aggressive” form of cancer.
Coulier said that symptoms arose in October when an upper respiratory infection resulted in a swelling in his lymph nodes. His doctor suggested he have a biopsy, PET and CT scan to gain a complete sense of his condition.
“Three days later, my doctors called me back, and they said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and it’s called B cell, and it’s very aggressive,” Coulier, best known as Uncle Joey in the sitcom Full House, told People. “I went from, ‘I got a little bit of a head cold,’ to ‘I have cancer,’ and it was pretty overwhelming. This has been a really fast roller coaster ride of a journey.”
He acknowledged the support plan his community built for him and shared his family’s reaction to his diagnosis. “We all kind of put our heads together and said, ‘OK, where are we going?’ And [family and close friends] had a very specific plan for how they were going to treat this at that point, my chances of curable went from something low to 90%,” he said.
He reported that he started chemotherapy just two weeks after learning of his diagnosis and has since undergone six rounds of chemotherapy every 21 days. His treatment is expected to end sometime in February 2025.
Coulier decided to be open with the public about his battle with the disease. “That was really a conscious decision of, I’m going to meet this head-on, and I want people to know it’s my life,” he said. “I’m not going to try and hide anything. I would rather talk about it and open the discussion and inspire people.”
The actor shared his takeaway from the experience: “The one thing that just kept presenting itself to me was to tell other people about it. Talk to them about getting something as simple as pre-screening or a breast exam, mammogram, a colonoscopy, or a prostate exam. It’s a really simple thing to do and it can add years to your life.”
