French President Emmanuel Macron said he would fight to make sure Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris returns to France after the season ended with Emily in Rome.

“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris! Emily in Paris in Rome doesn’t make sense,” Macron said in an interview published on Wednesday.

In the fourth season of the series, Emily, played by actress Lily Collins, left behind the City of Lights for the Eternal City.

The show, one of Netflix’s biggest hits, has been renewed for a fifth season, although some Paris natives have criticized the series for its stereotypical depiction of Parisians.

Macron, on the other hand, would beg to differ.

“I think it’s good for the image of France. Emily in Paris is super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country,” the president said.

Macron’s wife, Brigitte, is also a fond viewer of the show, as she made a cameo appearance in the fourth season.

President Macron said he was “super proud” of his wife, adding that it was a “very good moment for her.”

Netflix has already stated that Emily will be taking a Rome holiday in the fifth season, but Macron seems eager to ensure the American expatriate’s safe return to Paris.

In 2022, Ukraine’s culture minister slammed the show for its “insulting” portrayal of a Ukrainian woman on the series.
