Fredric Brandt, Dermatologist To The Stars, Found Dead At 65

Fredric Brandt, the esteemed cosmetic dermatologist favored by celebrities, was found dead on Sunday. He was 65.

Brandt’s death was confirmed Monday morning, though no details have been released about the doctor’s cause of death.  “He passed away from a sudden death at his home in Coral Gables,” Susan Biegacz of Tractenberg & Co. told People.

Brandt’s publicist Jacquie Tractenberg added that he was “suffering from an illness,” to the New York Post’s Page Six. “He passed away this morning. Everyone who knows him is devastated,” Tractenberg told the paper.

“I worked with him for over 20 years and he was an amazing man, not only was he a brilliant doctor, but he was the kindest human being,” she continued.

Although no cause of death has been confirmed, reports suggest that he may have committed suicide, according to Miami Herald reporter Lesley Abravanel, who has been tweeting about the dermatologist’s death. According to Abravanel, Brandt had been suffering from depression and was “devastated” about comparisons to a plastic surgeon character on Tina Fey’s new Netflix show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

The character Abravanel is referring to is Dr. Franff, an esteemed plastic surgeon frequented by the wealthy Jacqueline, played by Jane Krakowski. Franff, with a comically grotesque plastic-looking face and bleached limp hair was played by Martin Short in the fourth episode of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s first season. Dr. Franff was allegedly modeled after the well known Dr. Brandt.

Brandt, who had been dubbed the Baron of Botox, admitted recently that he wished that maybe he’d done less of the popular procedure himself.

“I’ve been kind of a pioneer in pushing the limits to see how things work and what the look would be,” the doctor told The New York Times in a profile. “Would I change anything I’ve done? I might not have used as much Botox, because you don’t want to look quite as frozen.”

Brandt counted Madonna, model Stephanie Seymour and Kelly Ripa as patients.
