Gloria Darden, the surviving mother of Freddie Gray, reportedly attempted suicide last week.

Gloria Darden’s Suicide Attempt

Darden attempted suicide last Wednesday evening, reported WJZ television. She was hospitalized following the attempt and was treated for superficial wounds. Neither surgery nor stitches were necessary.

On Thursday, Darden underwent psychiatric evaluation.

Darden’s attorney Billy Murphy released a statement on Friday to address her hospitalization and to condemn the invasion of her privacy.

“Because of an improper invasion of her privacy, Ms. Darden is being thrust into the national spotlight about an extraordinarily personal matter while she is still mourning the loss of her son,” reads Murphy’s statement. “I saw her today and I can assure you that this kind of publicity is not at all helpful. We strongly urge the media to show restraint. The family asks that you continue to pray for her and for them.”

Darden’s son Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 of this year and suffered injuries while in the custody of the Baltimore Police Department. Gray died a week after he was hospitalized. His death sparked unrest in Baltimore, as civil protests and riots broke out in the city. His story has been at the center of the Black Lives Matter movement, which looks to combat police brutality against African American men and women.

Six Baltimore police officers are facing criminal charges in Gray’s arrest and death. Gray’s family has been awarded $6.4 million from civil litigation against the city of Baltimore.
