Terrence McNally‘s Frankie & Johnny In The Clair De Lune, which opened last week at the Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, begins with bang – literally! Frankie (Audra McDonald) and Johnny (Michael Shannon) are having sex on stage as the play begins – grunty, awkward sex of a pair going at it for the first time. Post coitus, Johnny, a short-order cook, aggressively pursues a deeper relationship with Frankie, a shy waitress in the same restaurant. She’s put off by his “weirdness” and resists his overtures. Under the full moon, in Frankie’s shabby Hell’s Kitchen studio apartment, the pair of nobodies fight and then find unexpected ways that they connect.

McDonald and Shannon shine in their roles as everymen finding communality in the night. Director Arin Arbus‘s first-rate rival of McNally’s play delivers a night of the theater that’s anything but ordinary.
