Wal-Mart is being forced to recall donkey meat from its Jinan stores in Shandong, China, upon the discovery of fox DNA in the product.

Wal-Mart Recalls Contaminated Donkey Meat

The donkey meat in question was supplied to the big box store by Dezhou Fujude Food Company Limited, which also provided the contaminated meat to stores other than Wal-Mart in China. Wal-Mart, claiming a “zero-tolerance” policy for contamination, has vowed to improve its food safety protocol in the future.

Going forward, the company will conduct routine DNA testing on donkey, mutton, venison and beef. Wal-Mart will also be proactive in reporting any suppliers that they believe are providing them with fraudulent products.

Food Safety Scandals In China

In the past, American company Yum! Brands – which includes KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut – had a food safety scandal that involved bird flu. Locally made powdered baby formula also gave the Asian country a safety scare and caused many to return to using similar Western-made products.

As for cross-contamination of DNA in meat products, the U.K. faced a crackdown in regulation when horse DNA was found in frozen burger patties that were being sold at four supermarket chains.
