Dr. Seuss’ newest book, What Pet Should I Get?, hit bookshelves on Tuesday, and the children’s book has sparked rumors of more Dr. Seuss books.
The manuscript for What Pet Should I Get? was discovered by Audrey Geisel, Dr. Seuss’ widow – Dr. Seuss was also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel – in 2013, long after Seuss’ death, and is said to be just one of the many works Seuss left unfinished when he died in 1991.
According to Geisel, What Pet Should I Get? was stored alongside other sketches by Dr. Seuss himself, including a set of alphabet flash cards, sketches and drawings kept in a folder titled “Noble Failures” and some sketches titled “The Horse Museum.” The book was, according to Dr. Seuss’ longtime assistant Claudia Prescott, “more complete than anything else we had seen.” Prescott was in charge of putting the finishing touches on the newest Dr. Seuss book, including making decisions on the final rhymes and color schemes.
It’s unclear, however, whether these lost sketches make a complete story or will ever be published as a new Dr. Seuss book like What Pet Should I Get? “There are some projects which are interesting, but nothing that he completed,” said Cathy Goldsmith, who was an art director during Seuss’ career and now works as Vice President of Random House.
Random House, which released What Pet Should I Get?, has not yet officially announced any more new Dr. Seuss books, but Bill Dreyer, the Curator for the Art of Seuss, told reporters that they could expect more. “I understand from Random House that there are more books that will come out of this find,” Dreyer said in an interview with CBS News.
