Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who served as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, announced yesterday that he is officially cancer-free.
Carter, 91, stated that his latest MRI scan on his brain showed no signs of the original cancer cells or new ones spawning in that area, but will still receive treatment to keep it subdued. He announced the news during a Sunday School class he was teaching, with all in attendance applauding his condition after the announcement. Carter’s grandson James Carter confirmed the good news as well. “There’s no cancer in his body at this point,” said Carter. “He’s not going to stop doing the treatment, but at this point, there’s no cancer. It’s incredible news.”
The former President announced in August that four spots of cancer had moved to his brain after the cancer was first found in his liver. In November, doctors Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta had stated that Carter’s treatments were going well and that the cancer had not spread no more.
President Carter served as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, succeeding Gerald Ford, pardoning all evaders of Vietnam War drafts and creating the Department of Energy and Department of Education in the cabinet. He also won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Carter Center, a non-profit organization that advances human rights.
