David Duke, former Klu Klux Klan grand wizard and fervent white nationalist, said last Wednesday on a radio program that voting for anyone besides Donald Trump is “treason to your heritage.”
Duke did admit that he has not formally endorsed Trump, but then went on to say, “I do support his candidacy. And I supposed voting for him as a strategic action. I hope he does everything we hope he will do.”
He continued with a call to action for his listeners to “get off your rear end that’s getting fatter and fatter for many of you everyday on your chairs,” instructing them to “call the Republican Party, but call Donald Trump’s headquarters, volunteer… go in there, you’re gonna meet people who are going to have the same kind of mind-set that you have.”
This isn’t the first time he has spoken out in support for Trump. In December, he told Politico that “[Trump has] Made it OK to talk about these incredible concerns of European Americans today, because I think Europeans Americans know they are the only group that can’t defend their own essential interests and their point of view. He’s meant a lot for the human rights of European Americans.”
Trump brushed off Duke’s support. “David Duke endorsed me? Ok, alright. I disavow, ok?” said Trump before quickly moving to another question.
A national survey from last month was reported by The New York Times this week showing that 20% of Trump’s supporters disagree with the Emancipation Proclamation which freed Southern slaves during the Civil War.
