On Friday, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy blamed his nemesis, Rep. Matt Gaetz, for leading the charge against him “because he had sex with an underage girl.” The former Speaker is referencing an incident the House Ethics Committee is investigating. He claims that Gaetz demanded that he drop the investigation as a condition of his support.
McCarthy’s jab on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher was the latest in his long-running campaign against Gaetz.
Host Bill Maher went on to say that McCarthy went to Mar-a-Lago to “kiss” Donald Trump‘s “a–” after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
McCarthy suggested the former president for never prosecuting “his political opponents,” facetiously asking Maher if Trump ever indicted any Democrats.
“He himself was indicted. That’s the point,” Maher replied, referencing the charges brought against the former president for his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
McCarthy said Trump “was indicted on something other Americans have never been indicted for,” to which Maher pointed out that Trump “has not conceded the last election.”
When McCarthy asked if Hilary Clinton conceded the 2016 election, Maher said, “Yes, she did! She came out, and before the cock crowed!” He continued asking McCarthy why he was “denying this obvious fact.”
Frustrated, McCarthy recalled Democrats challenging the presidential election in Congress in 2000, 2004 and 2006. Maher argued that “challenging is not the same thing as conceding.”
“Hilary Clinton conceded the election. You guys like to conflate this with people who say the Democrats have said Donald Trump is not a legitimate president,” Maher continued. “Yeah, maybe that’s kind of a cool thing to say. It’s different than conceding the election and saying, ‘Did he win that election? Biden?'”
McCarthy said he agreed with Maher’s assertions. Maher asked if he “actually told that to Trump,” and McCarthy said he did.
“And then you switched?” Maher asked.
“No, I didn’t switch!” McCarthy replied.
Maher accused McCarthy of going “down to Mar-a-Lago and kiss[ing] his a– after that!”
McCarthy responded with “bulls–.” After some crosstalk, the former Speaker said he had “no qualms going to see Donald Trump. He’s my friend. I served with him just like I do anybody else. Go down and have a conversation with him.”
Seibert speculated, “If struggle without context is baffling, heaven without struggle isn’t very interesting.”
The shooter was identified to be John R. Lyons, 24, of Westchester, Illinois.
