Undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather made an appearance at a political campaign rally in Zimbabwe as part of his Motherland Tour. Zimbabwe’s majority party organized the event in an attempt to garner favor from young voters ahead of the country’s election in August. The occasion featured live music and exhibition fights between local boxers.
ZANU PF party supporters welcomed Mayweather to Mabvuku, a township just outside Zimbabwe’s capital of Harare. Scott Sakupwanya, a wealthy and close ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, claimed he invited Mayweather. “People thought I was lying when I said I would bring Mayweather, but he is here. This shows that what I will promise in this election will come to pass,” he told reporters. Sakupwanya is running for a parliamentary seat next month.
Mayweather, 46, entertained the crowd with a workout where he hit a punching bag and jumped rope.
Young voters are believed to be the decisive base for the two main political parties, ZANU PF and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). ZANU PF is reportedly not popular in Zimbabwe’s urban areas.
The presidential election will occur during a time of economic crisis and high inflation.
