Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins’ Death Likely Overdose After 10 Substances Found In System

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, it’s likely that the Foo Fighter drummer Taylor Hawkins’ death in Colombia was due to some form of a drug overdose as an initial toxicology test reported as many as 10 substances in his system.

Hawkins was set to perform with Foo Fighters at the music festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, but he was found dead in his hotel room after calling down with complaints about chest pain on Friday night. Fans were gathered to see the band perform that same night, and the performance was later canceled due to his death.

Fans gathered outside of his hotel room to mourn the passing of the drummer, and the band confirmed his passing in the statement below:

According to a preliminary study released by the Colombia Attorney General’s Office, Hawkins tested positive for many substances including THC, opioids, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants. Hawkins overdosed once before in 2001 and was in a coma for two weeks following the incident.

Along with his former bandmates, many in the music world have made tributes to the legendary drummer in the wake of his death. Musicians including Miley CyrusLiam Gallagher, and Chris Martin of Coldplay have made tributes to Hawkins during concerts over this past weekend. Even more, stars including Lenny KravitzRingo Starr and David Letterman wrote tributes to him online.

It remains to be seen whether the Foo Fighters will still be performing at the Grammy Awards on April 3.
