Donald Trump’s rivals in the 2024 presidential election have joined together to stop his momentum and highlight his cognitive decline.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) campaign recently posed a thread of more than 24 confusing remarks made by the former president, writing that “this is why handlers won’t let him debate.”
Trump has not attended any of the Republican presidential primary debates this season.
Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley mocked Trump for speaking positively about the leaders of China and North Korea, arguing that he is clearly “confused” about America’s allies and adversaries.
President Joe Biden’s campaign has also started posting about Trump’s mistakes and shared a one-minute-long video compilation of his fumbles. In press statements, the campaign has also mocked Trump for mispronouncing “Hamas” and for pronouncing the abbreviation for the United States as “us.”
The Biden campaign has been particularly focused on shifting the public perception that the president is too old to run for another term. His team has been happy to point out Trump’s, 77, missteps that have often been overshadowed by other buzz surrounding him, mainly about the 91 criminal charges he is currently facing.
Trump’s stumbles are hardly new. In 2016, the former president referred to the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, as “7/11.” In 2019, he addressed Apple CEO Tim Cook as “Tim Apple.”
In the past two months, Trump has confused Biden with former President Barack Obama seven times.
In many ways, his political opponents are using Trump’s own tactics against him. He has been known to criticize Biden’s age and mental capacities during his past four years in office.
