Five Worst Super Bowl Ads: Nationwide, Doritos, Game Of War, Mercedes Benz, Fiat

While Super Bowl XLIX did feature a number of impressively creative commercials, there were also quite a few that missed the mark. Below are five of the worst ads of the 2015 Super Bowl.

Nationwide: Childhood Accidents

Nationwide decided that the prime advertising real estate of the Super Bowl was the perfect opportunity to inspire panic in American households. The manipulative spot featured a young actor, speaking from beyond the grave about all of the things he’ll never get to do – learn to ride a bike, travel the world with his best pal or get married – because he died in a childhood accident.

Doritos “When Pigs Fly”

Doritos, once known for its clever and amusing ads, seems to have run out of ideas. While the Dorito’s “Middle Seat” ad with the guy trying to strike up a flirtation with a pretty young mother was trite, it wasn’t worse than the company’s “When Pigs Fly” ad.

Game of War

Super model Kate Upon starred in the commercial for online game Game of War. Clearly trying to appeal to the main demographics of such a game, the ad played up Upton’s sex appeal – but Upton seemed slightly disinterested in playing up the game. Reading her script, the model and sometime-actress seemed utterly bored and disinterested in the product she was shilling for.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz attempted to modernize the old Tortoise and the Hare fable, but seemed to have forgotten the message it was meant to convey. Instead of the tortoise’s slow and steady pace seeing him to victory, Mercedes essentially has him cheat with their new vehicle and speed his way to the finish line – with what looks like the hare’s girlfriend in the passenger seat.

Fiat

Fiat chose to run with a Viagra theme for the car’s Super Bowl commercial. In some village in Italy, an older gentleman goes for the little blue pill before hopping into bed with his wife, but he fumbles it and out it goes through the open window. Bouncing on the eaves and through the drain pipe, it winds up dropping into the gas tank of an unsuspecting Fiat. “The all-new Fiat 500x crossover: bigger, more powerful and ready for action,” goes the voiceover.
