Atlanta rapper Fish Scales went through a terrifying ordeal Wednesday evening when he was ambushed by a group of robbers in his brewery, and then kidnapped and forced to drive to a remote area where he was then shot while trying to escape.
Luckily, the Nappy Roots member survived and is in recovery now.
According to police, Scales, whose full name is Melvin Adams Jr. first encountered the robbers when they entered Alantucky Brewery, which he co-owns with fellow Nappy Roots rapper Skinny Deville. They reportedly asked for cash, to which he responded by saying they don’t have cash on-site and only accept cards.
Adams was then kidnapped by the group who demanded that he take them to where he can get them money. He drove to the town of Hapeville, where he then attempted to flee and was shot by the robbers. They fled after shooting Adams, who then sought help at a nearby house.
The cops say the suspects are still at large after fleeing the scene. One good note, however, is that they only got about $30 from the ordeal.
Nappy Roots took to their group Instagram account to communicate on behalf of Adams. The post read in part, “He wanted to let everyone know that he is in good spirits and can’t wait to get to the music and Alantucky brewing.”
Skinny Deville, aka William Hughes, spoke with WSB-TV Channel 2 about the incident. When asked why his business would be targeted, he responded, “I don’t know. We’re one of the first black-owned breweries. I think people see it as an opportunity.”
The group was first formed in 1995 when its founding members, including Adams, met at Western Kentucky University. Their debut Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz peaked at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, and its second single Po’ Folks featuring Anthony Hamilton is one of their best-received songs even getting a 2003 Grammy Award nomination.
