First Trailer For CW’s ‘Batwoman,’ Starring Ruby Rose As First Lesbian Super Hero, Released [VIDEO]

The first trailer for The CW’s Batwoman, which stars Ruby Rose as the first lesbian leading super hero, has been released. The character has an interesting and surprising history.

Who Is Batwoman?

Batwoman was created in 1956 shortly after the release of the controversial book, Seduction of the Innocent, which among its many claims, alleged that Batman and Robin were gay.

In an effort to combat these claims, Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman, along with Bette Kane, the original Batgirl, were created to be the love interests to the dynamic duo in the 1950s.

Kathy was a female rival to Batman, she owned a circus and appeared regularly in comics until 1964.

Yet, while the character was popular, she was largely surpassed in popularity by the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl, and the character was deemed superfluous and was removed from the regular lineup, though she had made a few appearances over the years.

The Kate Kane version of Batwoman, who will be feature in the TV show, was created in 2006. Unlike her predecessor, Kate is a lesbian and is the cousin of Bruce Wayne.

The character is largely independent of Batman, and is one few notable LGBT superheroes. Her creation in 2006, was seen as “more reflective of today’s society and fanbase,” said DC Comic’s VP Dan Didio.

Kate made her live-action debut in the Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds, and her show appears to take place on Earth 1, the same universe that Flash and Arrow takes place.

Judging from the trailer, Bruce Wayne has disappeared, and Kate has to take up the mantel to defend the city and find her missing ex-girlfriend, Sophie.
