The first trailer for the new Star Trek film, Star Trek: Into Darkness, has been released, marking the return of director J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zoe Zaldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and John Cho to the Star Trek franchise, with the notable addition of Benedict Cumberbatch as the movie’s still unnamed villain.
The trailer is accompanied by a haunting monologue from Cumberbatch: “You think your world is safe. It is an illusion, a comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance. So, shall we begin?”
The trailer also features brief shots of Captain Kirk (Pine), Nyoto Uhura (Zaldana), Spock (Quinto), Hikaru Sulu (Cho), Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Pegg) and Cumberbatch, as the mysterious villain wielding a massive gun, but little is else is revealed over the 66-second trailer aside from a futuristic city, expansive wilderness, and what looks to be a volcanic setting.
Some have speculated that this film harkens back to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, and if so it would mean that Cumberbatch would play Kahn and that Spock would ultimately sacrifice himself for the good of the crew.
Fans who want a clearer picture of what’s in store for this new installment should attend select IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as nine minutes of footage from Star Trek: Into Darkness will be included in the preview material. Star Trek: Into Darkness will be released on May 17, 2013.
