Finn Jones has revealed details for the third season of Iron Fist before the series was canceled after its second season in 2018. Iron Fist starred Jones as the character Danny Rand, a billionaire and martial artist who returns to New York to take back his family’s company after being thought to be dead for years. In addition to fighting for control over his company against his late father’s best friend and murderer (David Wenham), Danny protects the city from the ancient terrorist organization known as The Hand, which aims to destroy it for their own nefarious purposes. The first season of Iron Fist was panned by critics and audiences, who criticized the pacing, writing and performance from Jones as the title character. Shortly after Iron Fist ended, the other Marvel shows on Netflix were soon canceled as well including Luke Cage, Daredevil, The Punisher and Jessica Jones.
Jones expressed his disappointment with the show’s cancelation, admitting that finding out about Iron Fist’s cancellation was like losing a close friend or family member. Jones revealed that the third season of Iron Fist would have had Danny and his best friend Ward (Tom Pelphrey) traveling around the world while his love interest Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) would defend New York with her new powers that she acquired in season 2. According to Jones, many story elements had already been planned out. “Raven Metzner, who was the showrunner for the second season, and I were sure that there was gonna be a Season 3, so we had already devised the whole thing,” he told Collider. “I was so excited to get into that. It really was gonna be about Danny finally assuming the role of the Iron Fist, fully accomplished, fully charged up, and fully in control of his shit, as well. It was gonna be this amazing story [with] Danny and Ward off in foreign lands as a buddy storyline almost. And then, you had Colleen in New York, isolated with this new power, struggling to come to terms with her identity and with this power. At some point, we would have met again and probably formed this crazy power couple [or] superhero relationship.”
While it is unfortunate that Iron Fist was canceled before it could showcase a potentially exciting storyline, there is a small possibility for the show to return if Disney ever decides to revive it now that they have the rights to the character.
