A fight broke out in the streets of New York City on Thursday while a large group of fans were paying their respects to late rapper Prodigy, who died ten days earlier.
The incident occurred when a large group of people gathered outside of the Frank E. Campbell funeral chapel, where the rapper’s funeral was held. While the overwhelming majority of the fans were there to pay their respects, one fan engaged in an argument with the police after he was told to stop blocking traffic and other pedestrians, according to TMZ.
The man, identified as Samuel Williams, 37, by Page Six, and several NYPD officers got into a shouting match after the cops ordered him off the road. Williams soon left the middle of the street. Still shouting back and forth, several officers rushed over the man to arrest him when a large crowd of people converged on the chaos.
In a video obtained by TMZ, some of the crowd can be seen trying to intervene in the arrest while others film on their phones.
The man was eventually arrested for obstruction, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
While the scuffle was certainly a dark moment, there were no other reports of violence during the Mobb Deep rapper’s funeral.
Many artists showed up to give the New York MC his final send off. The funeral was attended by Fat Joe, LL Cool J, Remy Ma, Ice-T, and many others.
Fat Joe, also a New York rapper, shared his sorrow over his colleague’s passing on Instagram.
“I stood in the funeral today in disbelief I was so overwhelmed with sorrow just as a fan of Hip Hop music. I couldn’t believe we lost a Giant. his music was original and always authentic. he and Hav stayed true to their sound. as I look in the room and saw so many people who have played a part in my life I realized how blessed we are to have had one another in this industry. first we Rap then promote then hit the road to pay our bills. I know I’ve been threw ups and downs financially and emotionally I can only imagine how hard it was for P to be fighting an illness his whole life and still provided for his family and most of all he did it for his fans. New York we lost a king , a genius a legend I will truly miss him and always have love for the infamous Mobb Deep. Rip Prodigy.”
Prodigy died after a life-long battle with sickle cell anemia. He was 42.
