Tension is brewing on the set of Fifity Shades of Grey as author of the original books, E.L. James is rumored to be clashing with director Sam Taylor-Johnson behind the scenes.

James, author of the sexy trilogy, has been consistently involved in the adaptation of her book into the upcoming film staring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. And, though Johnson and Dornan appear to be heating up on screen, James and Taylor-Johnson are reportedly bickering behind camera over changes made to the storyline as the book is taken from page to screen.

E.L. James Fighting With Sam Taylor-Johnson Over Script

“Sam is getting annoyed about the way the script is handled. E.L. James wants the movie to match the book exactly, but Sam has a different perspective. Sam is reminding E.L. she writes the books and she makes the movies. This has caused some tension between the two of them,” a source tells E! News.

Tension between author and director does not come as a surprise. In an interview done before production began on the film, James admitted that she did engage in some spirited debates with writers and producers about the script, saying, “We have some very healthy debates between us all, and that’s been interesting.”

In that same interview, James declared that she has script approval and understands that not everything written on the page can be included in the film.

“It’s a very dense book, and people don’t realize that because they read it so quickly. So things got cut, but I completely understood why. Something may service the story in literary terms, but not on the screen.”

When it was announced that Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) would be directing the racy film, the director released a statement saying that she was eager to work with James to honor the original Fifty Shades of Grey book fans fell in love with:

“I am excited to be charged with the evolution of Fifty Shades of Grey from page to screen. For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”

Taylor-Johnson and James may have hit some bumps behind the scenes, but sources say production on the film has been going incredibly smoothly overall.

“Sam has a great relationship with the actors. The script is running smoothly and there is not a lot of re-shooting that has had to be done,” a source close to the film tells E! News.

Fifty Shades of Grey is currently filming in Vancouver and aiming for a Feb. 13, 2015 release date.
