Universal has released the first teaser trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey sequel Fifty Shades Darker.
“Are you ready for something darker,” the trailer asks as it shows Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) getting dressed, completing his look with a black mask. “Fifty Shades Darker. Coming to theaters.”
While Universal is already building anticipation for the sequel to the erotic romance flick that hit theaters this past Valentine’s Day, the studio has yet to tap a director to helm the project. Sam Taylor Johnson, who adapted E.L. James’ first book in the series, walked away from the sequel in part due to disagreements with James.
Fifty Shades of Grey screenwriter Kelly Marcel also declined to work on the sequel, but she’s already been replaced by none other than James’ husband, Niall Leonard. Many have questioned Leonard’s hiring, as he has no film credits to his name and could be James’ way of getting more of her ideas onto the screen – but Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley has defended the decision.
“He actually did a draft that wasn’t credited on the first movie, and he did a really good job,” Langley said of Leonard at The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Power Lawyers breakfast. She also added that Fifty Shades Darker will be “more of a thriller.”
Fifty Shades Darker is slated to hit theaters Feb. 10, 2017.
