Normani reportedly began to face hate on Twitter after she hesitated to find something she liked about fellow bandmate Camila Cabello.
Normani described Camila as “quirky” and “cute” but didn’t expand on her answer the way she did for her other bandmates, Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui and Dinah Jane.
On Friday, Normani decided to address the issue and made it clear that she doesn’t deserve the hate she’s been receiving.
“I would like to address an issue that has been completely blown out of proportion,” Normani tweeted. “I have shown nothing but commitment for the success of Fifth Harmony, even promoting on my days off but yet I always find myself as the target of unjust hate and slander.”
“I have love and respect for all four band mates whether you choose to believe it or not,” she added. “I am here to offer great music and performance along with my girls.”
The next day, Normani apparently decided that she’s finally had enough and announced to fans that she’s taking a break from Twitter due to racial bullies and constant hate.
“I’ve never been one to deny anyone of their opinions, but over the course of this last week and especially over the last 48 hours, I’ve not just been cyber bullied I’ve been racially bullied,” Normani wrote. “I’m not the first black female celebrity to deal with this and I’m sure I won’t be the last.”
“I want to take this moment to say love goes much further than hate in this world,” she continued. “Hiding behind a computer and putting people down, especially for the color of their skin, doesn’t make you cool, it makes you a coward!”
Camila posted her own remarks on Twitter and told fans that she will not tolerate the hate being thrown around in her honor.
“You don’t have to hate on somebody else to support me- I don’t appreciate it and it’s not what I’m about,” Camila tweeted. “Be kind or move on.”
Camila has been working on solo material for months and has already released music with Shawn Mendes, leading to rumors that there is tension among the girl band.
However, Fifth Harmony are currently promoting their second album, but recently cancelled tour dates in the US to focus on their third album.
