Fetty Wap Sentenced To Six Years In Prison For Smuggling Drugs Into The U.S.

On Tuesday, rapper Fetty Wapp was sentenced to six years in prison for drug distribution.

He also received five years of supervision after his release.

The 31-year-old, whose birth name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, appeared remorseful in court and accepted the consequences of his past actions, saying that “he was exactly where he was supposed to be.”

According to court documents, Maxwell and his co-defendants were part of an organization that smuggled over 100 kilograms of deadly opioids, like heroin, fentanyl and crack cocaine, into the U.S., using the Postal Service and vehicles with hidden compartments to carry them across the country.

The music artist’s initial arrest was in October 2021, when he was reported to contribute to a drug-smuggling operation in New York City in operation between June 2019 and June 2020.

In an attempt to lighten his sentencing, the rapper’s attorney, Elizabeth Macedonio, explained the situations that led him to take part in the criminal organization, claiming that the pandemic led to Maxwell’s desperation.

“In or about 2020, with the coming of the worldwide pandemic, things began to change for Mr. Maxwell. There were no opportunities to perform, thus his income was severely limited,” Macedonio stated. “He was sued personally, was going through a divorce, and was involved with a tour manager who was stealing from him. While the bills kept coming in, the money to pay them was running out. At or about the same time, Mr. Maxwell lost his grandparents and several other people who were close to him.”

Maxwell was not alone in this trial as he was joined by his co-defendants, who also pleaded guilty: Anthony Leonardi, 49, Robert Leonardi, 28, Brian Sullivan, 27 and Kavaugh Wiggins, 28.

The rapper is due back in court on November 24.
