Fergie sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” for the opening of the NBA All-Star game over the weekend, but drew laughs for her quirky style.
Instead of performing the National Anthem as most performers might, Fergie changed up the tune, added a beat and made the song a sexy spectacle. “I’ve seen the national anthem performed hundreds of times but never in the key of ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ congrats,” wrote author Molly Knight on Twitter. Later she added, “People think I am dragging Fergie but I have never been so entertained during an anthem. We do not deserve her.”

“Not sure what Fergie was going for on that national anthem performance but if it was ‘my friends drunk mom acting sexy’ she nailed it,” said comedian Johnny Taylor Jr.
The singer appeared to be having a great time on the court, adding various flourishes to her performance. The crowd chimed in with laughs, as did some of the players. Chance the Rapper was in the audience and could be seen smiling as Fergie sang. Golden State Warrior Draymond Green was also spotted on screen, first with a stone cold expression, which then turned to laughter as the singer neared the end of her song.
Some Internet users are making call backs to when Carl Lewis couldn’t hit the high note during his National Anthem performance at the 1993 NBA Finals. “Even Carl Lewis thinks Fergie’s anthem was trash,” one user tweeted. “Congratulations Carl Lewis. You’ve finally shed the title of worst anthem singer ever. #Fergie,” wrote another.
