Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything actress, might be starring in a stand-alone Star Wars spinoff.
Jones has done numerous reads and tests for the Lucasfilm and Disney project, and is now in talks to star in the Star Wars spinoff, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Rooney Mara were also apparently reading and testing for the leading female part.
It’s unknown which Star Wars character – or characters – the spinoff will be focusing on. However, the studio has also been looking to cast a male lead, and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez were reportedly being considered.
Gareth Edwards is directing the picture from a script by Chris Weitz.
Jones, who received a best actress Academy Award nomination for her performance as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything, stars alongside James Franco and Jonah Hill in the forthcoming thriller True Story and has a number of other projects in various stages of production – including action flick Autobahn with Nicholas Hoult and Anthony Hopkins and fantasy drama A Monster Calls.
The untitled Star Wars spinoff is slated to hit theaters Dec. 16, 2016.
