Feds Investigating After Auburn Men’s Basketball Flight Is Diverted After ‘In-Flight Altercation’
A plane carrying the Auburn men’s basketball team was diverted after an in-flight altercation.
The team was en route to Texas for a scheduled game against No. 4 Houston on Saturday at the Toyota Center.
The pilot requested an emergency landing in Montgomery, Alabama. Air traffic control inquired about the level of threat, and the pilot reportedly responded, “We have a bunch of basketball players fighting.”
The altercation eventually subsided, but flight personnel decided to return the flight to Auburn as a precaution.
Auburn police issued a statement on the incident:
“On Nov. 8, 2024, at approximately 3:20 p.m., officers from the Auburn Police Department responded to the Auburn University Regional Airport in reference to a report of disorderly passengers on a flight. Members of the flight crew reported that two passengers were involved in a physical altercation. The altercation occurred in airspace not in the jurisdiction of the Auburn Police Department.
“The pilot returned the flight to the Auburn University Regional Airport, where the involved passengers were removed from the aircraft. The appropriate investigative federal agencies were notified by the Auburn Police Department.”
The team still planned to travel to Houston on Friday night.
The Tigers hold a 1-0 record this season following a recent win over Vermont.
