NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 27: New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio poses for a photo with the 'Fearless Girl' statue during a press availability, March 27, 2017 in New York City. The “Fearless Girl” statue facing the “Charging Bull” on Wall Street will remain in position for at least another year.
Mayor Bill De Blasio said the bronze statue of a girl in a dress with a ponytail and her hands on her hips “has fueled powerful conversations about women in leadership.” It will remain staring down the bull, on Department of Transportation property, as part of the arts program through at least Feb. 2018.
“Now, she’ll be asserting herself and affirming her strength even after her temporary permit expires — a fitting path for a girl who refuses to quit,” de Blasio said. She was initially only permitted to stay until April 2.
“Fearless Girl” was put up in honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, and has become a staple destination of the city. Tourists have showed up to take pictures of her, and perhaps to put a pink Pussyhat on her from the Women’s March.
Arturo Di Modica, the sculptor of the opposing “Charging Bull” statue, called the girl “an advertising trick.” She was in fact installed by the State Street Global Advisors as part of the call for more than 3,500 companies to diversify their boards. A petition to make her a permanent addition to Wall Street garnered over 28,000 signatures on change.org.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Public Advocate Letitia James also supported the statue becoming permanent. “She’s not defiant, she’s brave, proud and strong, not belligerent,” said Kristen Visbal, the statue’s sculptor.
