Serbian-born designer Roksanda Ilincic, who counts Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Thandie Newton as fans, seemed to draw on her architectural background when she designed her abstract Spring 2013 collection, which debuted on Tuesday at London Fashion Week. Inspired by painters Niki de Saint Phalle and Joself Albers, Ilincic's chic line was populated by color block pieces combining sophisticated hues like mango, cobalt and dusty pink to emphasize a modern graphic aesthetic that used plain dresses without frills as Modernist canvases. "Colour has always been important in my design but this season I wanted to push it further than just color-blocking," Ilincic told Elle UK.
Although typically known for her eveningwear, Ilincic gave her range a decidedly more casual look by using laminated organza and jersey fabrics to produce a less formal but just as elegant feel — as well as insisting on comfort and wearability with modest hemlines, bell sleeves and relaxed 70s silhouettes. The scene-stealers? Oversized clutch bags in royal blues and jewel tones that complimented Ilincic's bold designs.
