Back in 2013, Reddit user Atomicbolt explained his/her theory that female lead Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) in Grease was really dead the whole time.
Atomicbolt begins by asking how, in the final scene of the 1978 classic movie musical, Sandy and greaser lead Danny Zuko (John Travolta) literally fly off into the sunset in his convertible. He/she then calls back to the beginning of the film, when Danny saves Sandy from nearly drowning at the beach. The theory explains that Danny was actually unsuccessful and that Sandy died on the beach that day.
“As she drowned, her brain (was) deprived of oxygen (and) she had a vivid coma fantasy involving her summer fling Danny, where they shared a magical year of high school together,” the user writes. “The visions get increasingly outlandish as time passes until finally, as Danny desperately tries to resuscitate her on the beach, she sees herself flying into heaven in her dying moments. The entire movie was a drowning woman’s coma fantasy.”
The post resurfaced recently, and has received a lot of backlash, mainly because of the existence of Grease 2, in which Sandy is alive and well.
Even Grease co-creator Jim Jacobs has spoken out on the matter, saying no, Sandy did not die at the end.
