Today, Prince fans around the world are commemorating the anniversary of the iconic singer-songwriter’s death.
It was a year ago today that the music superstar was found dead at Paisley Park, the suburban Minneapolis recording complex where he resided. He was found in his apartment on April 21, 2016, deceased from an opioid overdose. Fans were shocked to the core of his passing.
“Contradictions and seeming inconsistencies are part and parcel of (Prince’s) whole story — nothing is simple or self-evident,” noted Alex Hahn, a Boston lawyer and co-author of The Rise of Prince: 1958-1988. “With someone like Elvis Presley or Kurt Cobain or Amy Winehouse, there is an unambiguous picture of physical or psychological deterioration as part of substance abuse. Prince died of an overdose but he doesn’t have these other (signs) in common with them.”
Paisley Park has since been turned into a museum, with a full four days of events on tap, including concert performances by Prince’s former bandmates, and panel discussions. VIP passes for the Paisley schedule sold for $999, and sold out rapidly. The general admission passes were cheaper — $549 a pop — and were still available midweek.
Prince fans who can’t afford the pricey tickets can still honor the legendary singer by joining the street party outside First Avenue, a club Prince made world famous in “Purple Rain.” The Minnesota History Center is also staging a special exhibit of Prince Memorabilia, including his iconic “Purple Rain” suit.
Prince’s siblings will also pay tribute to the musician, by hosting an all-night dance party in the Minneapolis suburb of Golden Valley with Dez Dickerson, Apollonia Kotero, Andre Cymone, and others.
