The Cannes Film Festival celebrated Johnny Depp’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, but some fans are focusing on something else entirely, his teeth. 

After pictures of Depp at the French festival have circulated the internet, people are pointing out his “rotten” teeth, looking very much like Captain Jack Sparrow. 

Fans on Twitter offered many opinions on Depp’s teeth with one saying, “Johnny Depp is a famous actor and his teeth are not healthy.” 

“Very inspired to brush my teeth, floss and use a tongue scraper every time I see a pic of Johnny Depp at Cannes,” said another.

The 59-year-old actor was brought to tears when he received a seven-minute standing ovation at the festival. This was his first public appearance after the widely publicized defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The decaying appearance of his teeth is likely a consequence of his previous drug use and constant smoking. Some drugs are known to wear down teeth and enamel, promoting tooth decay. The Depp v. Heard trial last year had him telling the jury that he had “tried every drug known to man” before he was 15 years old. 

Although his teeth are just getting noticed, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor has previously admitted to his dental problems, “I’ve got loads of cavities. I had a root canal done eight years ago that’s unfinished. It’s like a rotten little stub,” he said in a 1995 interview with Premiere. 

“I’m proud of these,” Depp said. “When I see people with perfect teeth, it drives me up the wall. I’d rather swallow a tick than have that!”

Before the red carpet event, the three-time Academy Award nominee reportedly signed the biggest fragrance contract in history, a three-year contract for $20 million with Dior.
