Family of Austin Metcalf, Teen Killed By Competitor At Track Meet, Outraged At Son’s Killer Being Labeled A ‘Victim’
A spokesperson for Karmelo Anthony, the accused killer of Austin Metcalf, has suggested that he is the victim of the situation, sparking outrage among Metcalf’s family and friends.
“Karmelo Anthony is safe at home. This moment is a reminder that a community united can never be divided,” Minister Dominique Alexander said. “We celebrate a victory for justice, for family, and for the power of people coming together to protect our youth.”
Anthony, 17, was released from prison after donations for the teen’s legal defense received more than $440,000 and a decision by a judge to lower his bond for the charges that he stabbed and killed Metcalf. Anthony admitted to the killing to the police. However, his lawyer indicated that he acted in self-defense.
Local police claim that a confrontation broke out between Metcalf and Anthony during a track meet when Metcalf called out Anthony for sitting under his team’s tent. He demanded that Anthony leave, and the argument escalated when Anthony withdrew a knife and stabbed the high school junior.
Alexander was previously forced to deny rumors that Metcalf bullied Anthony, saying that the two had never met each other before the stabbing. Alexander also claimed Anthony’s family could not leave their home after their address was leaked online, sparking “graphic and racist tweets,” including images of black children with knives in their heads.
Judge Angela Tucker, who reduced Anthony’s bail, has gone private on social media following racist attacks for her ruling, with several social media accounts publicly sharing her private information.
During the hearing, prosecutors questioned Anthony’s father about the donation page approaching the half-million-dollar mark. He responded that the fund was to be used for Anthony’s legal defense, but also disclosed that it would be used for security and help the family move following the threats aimed at them.
As part of his release terms, Anthony is under house arrest and required to wear an ankle monitor while living in the family’s rented Frisco home.
